KCC vs. Carl Sandburg College

The Cavaliers men's soccer team fell to 0-2 Wednesday following a closely contested 1-0 defeat to Carl Sandburg College.

KCC's men's soccer team faced Carl Sandburg College in their home opener Wednesday.

The first half yielded little in the way of clear-cut goal scoring opportunities for either side. Carl Sandburg held most of the possession, but KCC's defense stood strong and blocked off any routes to goal.

The Cavaliers came alive in the second half, creating multiple opportunities in front of goal, but they failed to convert any of them.

Despite KCC's sustained pressure in the opening exchanges of the second half, Carl Sandburg eventually opened the scoring. KCC's goalkeeper, Carter Levesque, pulled off a couple of great 1v1 saves, but Carl Sandburg's pressure on the counter attack proved to be the difference between the two teams.

After falling behind, The Cavaliers continued to pile on the pressure, even having one chance cleared off the goal line.

KCC's efforts proved to be in vain, with the game ending 1-0 in favor of Carl Sandburg College.

In the face of defeat, Levesque remained positive, “We put it all together in practice,” he said. He later stated that “We really just need to come out of the gate firing away. Shoot early, shoot often, and we'll put a couple in the back of the net,” insisting that getting off to a quicker start will be the difference going forward.

Regarding the team's performance, Levesque said that “We adjusted really well,” “you saw some beautiful one-twos on both sidelines, and you saw a lot of opportunities in the second half,” giving insight as to what The Cavaliers can build on going forward.

Levesque added that “We just need to adjust earlier and be able to pick up on those things on our own, rather than having to wait for half-time for our coach to tell us,” giving the impression that the second half showed opportunities to progress and improve.

The Cavaliers will face off against Rock Valley College at 4 p.m. September 11 away from home in their next match, hoping to turn these building blocks into a win.

KCC vs. SSC 04/20/2024

The KCC Cavaliers powered past South Suburban College in double-digit fashion Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Bulldogs 12-0 and extending their winning streak to five games.

The Cavs were led by strong hitting from Cole Freeman, who drove in five runs on two hits to secure the victory. Freeman doubled in the fourth inning, scoring three runs, and then doubled again in the seventh inning, scoring two more.

Tyler Thompson opened the scoring for KCC with a run-scoring double in the first inning that would keep the score at 1-0 for the first three innings.

The fourth inning was big for KCC, as the Cavs added four more runs to Freeman’s three. Nolan McCrossin, Chris Suchowski, and Dalton Hobick all singled, scoring one run apiece. Tyler Thompson grounded out, adding another run to put KCC up 8-0 going into the fifth inning.

Suchowski singled in the fifth to give the Cavs a run in the fifth and extend their lead to 9-0.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Cavaliers turned the heat up in the seventh. Hobick reached on an error to drive in a run before Cole Freeman doubled on a line drive to bring in two more runs and give KCC a 12-0 victory.

From the mound, Peyton Niksch and Kaleb Waller teamed up to shutout the Bulldogs. Niksch gave up just three hits and allowed no runs over his six innings, striking out eight and walking two. Waller threw the final inning in relief, allowed no hits, striking out one and walking one.

The Cavaliers shutout improved their record to 27-14. They will play again tomorrow (04/21), when they travel to take on McHenry County College at 12 pm CST.

Freeman led the Cavs with two runs, two hits and five RBI. Suchowski had two runs, two hits and two RBI. McCrossin recorded two runs, a hit, and an RBI. Thompson had a run, two hits and an RBI. Hobick added a run, a hit, and an RBI.

KCC vs. Harper College 04/16/2024

After trailing 3-1 in the third inning, the KCC Cavaliers used a strong fourth inning to turn the score in their favor, on their way to a 15-5 victory over the Harper College Hawks Tuesday afternoon.

KCC scored once in the first three innings, to make the score 3-1 going into the top of the fourth. Chris Suchowski tripled midway through the fourth, bringing home Amarion Paxton and Nate King to tie the score at three. Dalton Hobick bunted to bring home Suchowski, giving the Cavaliers a 4-3 lead.

KCC held the Hawks to a scoreless fourth inning, before extending their lead to 6-3 in the fifth when Paxton doubled to bring home Curtis McKay and Tyler Thompson. King went out on a sacrifice fly that gave the Cavs another run, and they ended the inning with a four-point lead.

The Cavs added three more runs to their score in the sixth inning to improve their score to 10-3. McKay went out on a sacrifice fly to kick off the inning, and Paxton hit a home run on a fly ball to add two more runs.

The Hawks managed a run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the score to 10-4.

After both teams were scoreless in the eighth inning, the Cavaliers scored five runs in the ninth, when an error brought Suchowski home and a wild pitch saw Hobick score, too. McKay went out on a sacrifice fly, bringing in a run and putting the Cavaliers ahead 13-4. Thompson singled on a line drive, adding a run and Suchowski walked with bases loaded to push the score to 15-4.

The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it would be enough to close the Cavs’ lead and they secured the ten-point victory.

The Cavaliers improved their record to 24-14-1 and will be on the road again when they play the College of DuPage at 3 pm on Thursday.

KCC vs. PSC 04/10/2024

The Kankakee Community College baseball team took a 13-7 victory over Prairie State College on Wednesday, powered by a team effort that saw the runs shared between six players.

Tyler Thompson led the Cavaliers’ effort offensively, driving in four runs on three hits. After doubling in the first inning to score one run, Thompson had an inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to confirm the Cavaliers’ win.

The Pioneers started the game off strong in the first inning, putting the Cavs at an early 3-0 deficit. They wouldn’t lead the game for long, though, as Jaeden Harris hit into a fielder’s choice to help the Cavs tie the game at three by the bottom of the fourth.

After Prairie State scored just one run in the fifth, KCC took the 5-4 lead when Curtis McKay doubled and Nathan King grounded out, each scoring a run.

The Pioneers managed the lead in the sixth, but the Cavaliers, led by a single from Amarion Paxton that drove in two runs, responded with five runs on four hits to take a 10-6 lead that they wouldn’t lose.

Thompson’s home run in the seventh inning put the Cavaliers ahead 13-7 to round out KCC’s scoring.

Ben Carlile secured the win for the Cavs from the mound, allowing one hit and zero runs over the first inning and the beginning of the second, striking out one and walking none. Aidan Nugent also assisted the Cavs, surrendering just six hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings, striking out eight and walking two.

The Cavaliers moved their record to 22-11 this season, continuing their success this month, as they have won five of six games.

KCC vs. MVCC 03/21/2024

The Lady Cavaliers shut out NJCAA Region IV opponent Moraine Valley CC Cyclones in double-header action Thursday afternoon 14-0 and 12-0 to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Game 1

In the first game, Takoda Morris drove in six runs on two hits to lead KCC to victory on the offensive. She doubled in both the first and fourth innings, scoring three runs each time.

The Lady Cavaliers got out to a strong start in the bottom of the first inning, as four players combined to give KCC a 7-0 lead. Marguerite Brown singled to score one run, Brynlee Wright had a double and scored one run, and Jaelyn Wiers singled to score one run.

The score remained unchanged until the fourth inning, when the Lady Cavaliers doubled their score, pushing their 7-0 lead to a 14-0 lead with eight hits. Tori Budde scored a run, Wright tripled to add another run, Wiers doubled and scored a run, and Estelle Audette singled to score a run.

KCC pitcher Katie Newberry played a big part in the first victory, allowing one hit and zero runs in five innings. She struck out nine and walked two Cyclones.

Game 2

In the second game, pitcher Jaelyn Latimer took the mound, quickly striking out two batters to hold the Cyclones to one base and no runs. Abby Lorenz singled and Wiers scored, before Anna Faber homered on a line drive to left field. KCC took the early 4-0 lead.

The Lady Cavaliers continued their dominance in the bottom of the third inning. Lauren Waller singled, Kaylynn Crotz tripled, and Wiers doubled, each scoring one run.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Cavaliers scored five runs on seven hits. Lorenz and Faber both doubled, scoring a run apiece. Waller, Wiers, and Dylan Rambally all added a single and a run each, finishing the Lady Cavaliers’ scoring in their 12-0 victory.

KCC held the Cyclones to no runs again in the second game, as Latimer did not allow any hits or runs over two innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Stats

The Lady Cavaliers improved to 17-2-1 this season and will travel to take on the Prairie State College Pioneers in another double-header Friday afternoon at 3pm and 5pm.

KCC vs. Morton College 03/19/2024

The Kankakee Community College Cavaliers used a strong first inning to defeat the Morton College Panthers 22-7 Tuesday afternoon in NJCAA Region IV play.

After the Cavaliers held the Panthers to a scoreless first inning, Cole Freeman hit a single to give the Cavaliers a strong start in the bottom of the first inning. Curtis McKay walked to load the bases for KCC early in the inning, before a double from Tyler Thompson brought Freeman and McKay home to put the Cavaliers up 2-0.

Amarion Paxton matched the double to give KCC a 4-point lead, before coming home to make the score 5-0. Dylan Coty hit a triple to bring Nate King and Freeman home, before McKay completed the play with a single that put KCC up 9-0.

After two outs, the Panthers managed to load the bases before KCC pitcher Kaleb Waller struck out a final Morton batter to carry the Cavs’ nine-point lead into the bottom of the second inning.

Nolan McCrossin hit a single to kick the second inning off for the Cavs. Amarion Paxton and Chris Suchowski both walked to load the bases. McCrossin scored; and Paxton and Suchoski made it home on a double from Freeman to put the Cavaliers ahead 12-0 to close out the second.

Morton responded with two runs in the third inning, but it would not be enough to narrow KCC’s lead.

McKay walked to first and stole second, before Thompson hit a single to push McKay to third. Morton struck out two KCC players in one play, but KCC responded by loading the bases and pushing McCrossin home again. Gavin Noreus recorded a single and the Cavs were up by thirteen. King scored to end the inning by expanding the lead to 16-2.

The Panthers did not score in the fourth, as Waller struck out two batters back-to-back and allowed just three bases before securing a third out. After an early out, KCC’s Thompson hit a double and McCrossin had a single to push the score to 17-2.

In the fifth inning, the Cavaliers sent freshman pitcher JJ Calmes to the mound. Morton hit a double, before three batters in a row found themselves out. The score remained unchanged as KCC entered the bottom of the fifth.

King and Noreus each had a single, and Freeman walked to load the bases without any outs immediately into the inning. Coty walked to bring King home, before McKay had a home run that put the Cavaliers up 22-2. KCC ended the inning with a twenty-point lead.

Calmes struck out two batters in the top of sixth, leading the Cavaliers in holding a Morton effort to one run. Noreus had a double and advanced to third after tagging up, but three outs saw the Cavaliers’ first scoreless inning.

The Panthers attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, recording five more runs to close the Cavaliers’ lead to 22-7. It would not be enough to close the large deficit and KCC took the victory.

The Cavaliers improved to 8-9-1 this season and will take on Black Hawk College on the road Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm CST.

King had 3 runs and a walk. Paxton had 3 runs, 3 RBI and a walk. McCrossin added 3 runs, an RBI, and a walk. Coty had 3 runs, 3 RBI and a walk. McKay had 2 runs, 5 RBI (including a home run) and a walk. Thompson had 2 runs and 2 RBI. Freeman recorded 2 runs, 2 RBI and a walk. Suchoski had 2 runs, an RBI, and a walk. KCC Women's Basketball vs. JJC 02/13/2024

Kankakee Community College had success from the free throw line to secure an 84-76 NJCAA Region 4 victory over Joliet Junior College on the road Tuesday night.

A free throw from Jaida Taylor gave the Cavaliers their first point of the game, which the Wolves quickly matched. KCC’s Valorie Dagg, Amaria Pender, and Myllena De Sousa teamed up to score six points, giving them a 9-3 lead. KCC kept with the Wolves offensively, until six points from JJC’s Ashanti Brown tied the quarter at 13.

The score stayed close, and the Lady Cavs entered halftime leading 33-32.

Following halftime, a six-point JJC run was matched by KCC in the form of two free throws by Jazmyn Smith and four points from De Sousa. KCC matched JJC’s scoring throughout the quarter until an eight-point run by Brown gave the Wolves a 58-50 lead. Jasmine Ferrero closed out the quarter for the Cavs, scoring two points to narrow the deficit to 58-52.

Seventeen of KCC’s 32 points in the final quarter came from free throws. Despite trailing 65-58 early in the fourth, the Lady Cavaliers turned the game around when Pender scored back-to-back baskets. Four points from Smith and two from Taylor flipped the score in KCC’s favor, 68-65. JJC scored twice to briefly take a one-point lead, but Ferrero sank a three-pointer to come through for KCC and take back the lead for good. KCC scored the rest of their points from the free throw line, as Taylor, Smith, Pender and Ferrero combined for 11 out of 12 shots.

The Lady Cavaliers scored 24 of 27 free throws during the game, ultimately taking the win 84-76. They improved to 13-12 and will host the Mineral Area Tech College Thursday at 5:30pm.

KCC Men's Basketball vs. JJC 02/13/2024

Kankakee Community College established a lead and didn’t let it go in a victory Tuesday on the road in Joliet.

The Cavaliers started with an early 10-2 lead, followed by Noah Mason hitting back-to-back three-pointers. After matching the Joliet Junior College opponents basket-for-basket, Khylan McKennie caught a defensive rebound and scored, kickstarting a KCC scoring surge of nine uninterrupted points to make their lead 38-24. The Wolves scored four points, but KCC responded with nine more before halftime, including a three-pointer from Rashad Smith and four points from Chavez Woods.

The Cavaliers stifled JJC’s attempts to close the gap in the second half. A nine-point run by the Wolves was briefly interrupted by two points from Dwain Nash, but KCC shut it down with three points from Lucas Burton and two more from Woods. Nash scored four points, including a big steal and basket, and McKennie added two more. That made the Cavs’ lead 67-45.

The Cavaliers matched the Wolves for the rest of the half, ultimately taking the win, 81-72.

The Cavaliers improved to 15-10 and will travel to play Daley College Saturday at 1pm.

KCC Basketball vs. WCC 02/10/2024

The Kankakee Community College Lady Cavaliers pushed past several late surges to  defeat Waubonsee Community College by seven points on Saturday.

The Cavaliers used early baskets from Valorie Dagg, Jaida Taylor, and Jazmyn Smith to match two three-pointers from the Lady Chiefs. Smith then scored a basket and two free throws to give KCC a 10-6 lead. KCC matched WCC point-for-point until the first quarter ended with a well-timed pass from Harmony Reynolds to Smith, who scored to give the Lady Cavs the lead, 22-18.

Smith scored two points early in the second quarter, quickly followed by a three-pointer from Kayla Jackson and six points from Amaria Pender, including a big steal and basket. Dagg added two points and the Lady Cavaliers were up 35-21 midway through the quarter. The Chiefs scored seven unanswered points, plus a free throw to close the gap. By halftime, KCC’s lead was 39-29.

Six Lady Cavaliers scored in the third quarter, including eight more points for Smith and three-pointers from Myllena de Sousa and Jackson. KCC led 63-44 going into the final quarter. 

The Cavaliers worked their way up to a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter following a three-pointer from Pender. WCC scored six straight points before Pender made two free throws. When WCC scored three more points, it was not enough, and KCC took the victory, 74-61. 

The Lady Cavs improved to 12-12, and will next play Joliet Junior College at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The KCC men will play immediately following the women’s game. Livestream links will be available on KCC’s Facebook page and https://athletics.kcc.edu before the games.

KCC Basketball vs. GSU JV 1/18/2024

KCC’s Lady Cavaliers passed by the Governors State University junior varsity team 72-45 Thursday night. The match-up featured several rotations of KCC players, with 11 Lady Cavs getting on the scoreboard.

KCC sprung out to an early 11-0 lead, with a three-pointer from Kayla Jackson, four points from Jaida Taylor, and a basket each from Aniyah Moody and Amaria Pender. After the Jaguars scored back-to-back three-pointers, the Lady Cavaliers continued to surge with four points from Myllena De Sousa and six from Jazmyn Smith. The Lady Cavs opened a 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, KCC built on its lead, finishing the first half 37-18.

Multiple Lady Cavs contributed in the third quarter, with baskets from Taylor, Smith, Pender, Moody and Jackson.  

At the end of three quarters, KCC remained in the lead, 59-32.

The Jaguars had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth, but KCC was prepared with a strong defense. Johnson matched a GSU three-pointer, before Valorie Dagg stole the ball and scored. Smith scored another two from under the basket, giving the Lady Cavs seven uninterrupted points. GSU would match the Lady Cavs’ scoring for the rest of the quarter, hitting the final three-pointer before the buzzer.

The Lady Cavs improved to 8-9 this season and will host the Highland Community College Cougars on Saturday at 1 p.m., which will be followed by the men’s game.

KCC Basketball vs. Triton College 1/17/2024

Kankakee Community College handed Triton College its first loss of the season in men’s hoops action Wednesday night. 

The victory was especially sweet for the Cavaliers to knock off a fellow Region 4 competitor.

Early on, the Cavs and Trojans traded leads. Joshua Ray spurred KCC with an early 3-pointer.

An energetic crowd helped KCC gain momentum and eventually develop a  46-31 lead at halftime.

An offensive effort from the Trojans found early success in the second half and they got within seven points. 

After more back-and-forth, KCC got  two-points from Dwain Nash, three points from Lucas Burton, and six points from Ray to make the score 93-74.  Nash sank two free throws to put the Cavaliers up by 21 points, their biggest lead of the game. As in the first half, the Trojans attempted to make a late comeback, but the Cavaliers’ lead proved to be too great, and they took the victory 101-85.

The Cavs improved to 13-5, extending their winning streak to five games. They will host the Highland Community College Cougars at 3 p.m. Saturday, immediately following the women’s game at 1pm.

KCC Basketball vs. MVCC 1/13/2024

The Lady Cavaliers saw success on the road against Moraine Valley Community College Saturday afternoon.

After leading 35-26 in the first half, the Lady Cavaliers held on when the Cyclones tied the game 40-40 halfway through the third quarter. Sophomore Amaria Pender scored four points, and Jazmyn Smith added two free throws before the Cyclones sank a three-pointer to put the Cavs ahead 46-43. KCC’s Brianna Sneed and Aniyah Moody each scored in response to MVCC’s next five points. The Cavs were up 50-48 at the end of the third quarter.

After a back-and forth fourth quarter, Pender sank a last-minute free throw to secure the Lady Cavs’ impressive 64-63 victory.

Pender led the Lady Cavs (17 points) Other scorers: Jasmine Ferrero (10 points), Myllena Lima De Sousa (10 points), Dagg (9 points), Moody (6 points), Kayla Jackson (6 points), Taylor (4 points) and  (2 points).

The Lady Cavs will next host Governors State University JV Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

KCC Basketball vs. KKC 1/13/2024

Kankakee Community College hosted Kennedy King College Saturday afternoon, claiming a dominant victory and extending their winning streak to four games.

In the first half, the Cavaliers sprung out to an early lead when quick plays from Quesim Anderson, Khylan McKennie, and Lucas Burton put KCC up 9-2. The Statesmen fought back, with four players combining to score nine points. The Cavs found creative ways to score, with a rebound and full-court pass to Joshua Ray for two, and an alley-oop by Chavez Woods and Ray for another two points to go up 21-11.

Kennedy-King scored four points on a short surge before Anderson, Burton, and McKennie from the Cavs scored eight more consecutive points. The Statesmen interrupted the run with two points before KCC added another five. 

At halftime, KCC led the contest 44-26.

In the second half, the Statesmen narrowed the Cavs’ lead to 11. At one point, KCC’s Burton scored nine more. The Cavs’ biggest lead was 75-53 and eventually walked away with a 94-75 win.

Following their victory, the Cavaliers are now 12-5, and will host Triton College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17. 

The Cavs had eight players score in the game. Burton (28 points) and McKennie (20 points) led the Cavaliers in scoring. Noah Mason and Ray had 10 points apiece, including 2-of-2 and 2-of-3 free throws, respectively. Also scoring: Woods (9 points),Dwain Nash (8 points), Anderson (6 points) and Smith (3 points).

KCC Basketball vs. Morton College 12/7/2023

The KCC Cavaliers fell to Morton College 88-51 Thursday night. 

The Panthers established a 21-10 lead in the first quarter.

As the second quarter began, Jazmyn Smith of the Cavs scored two points, followed quickly by a free throw from Jaida Taylor. Another two points from Smith and a three-pointer from Amaria Pender helped the Cavs. Valorie Dagg from KCC also scored on an assist from Jasmine Ferrero to give KCC the final four points in the half. 

At halftime, the Cavs were trailing 34-26.

The Panthers put up 30-points in the third quarter. The Cavs didn’t match them, getting 11 points, with free throws from Pender, and a 3-pointer each from Smith and Ferrero. 

The Cavs were outscored again in the fourth quarter. A 12-point run by Morton was interrupted by two points from Dagg, and two points from KCC’s Harmony Reynolds. Taylor scored two points and Aniyah Moody added four points. Zipporah Johnson scored the game’s final two points. 

The Lady Cavs fell to 5-4, and will host the College of Lake County at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Smith led the Lady Cavs with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Taylor had 11 points, 8 rebounds and a steal. Pender had 10 points, 4 steals and 2 rebounds. Dagg and Moody added 4 points apiece.

KCC Basketball vs. Daley College 12/5/2023

The Kankakee Community College Cavaliers took an 84-74 victory over the Richard J Daley College Bulldogs Tuesday night. 

Early in the first half, seven points from Joshua Ray helped the Cavaliers spring out to an 11-5 lead. The Bulldogs responded and came within a point, 12-11. KCC later went up 29-17 after a 10-point run. Daley College answered to come within four, at 29-25. Baskets by the Cavs’ Lucas Burton, Chavez Woods and Khylan McKennie were not enough to hold a late surge by the Bulldogs which tied it up 38-38 at the half.

It was back-and-forth through much of the second half.  Burton got 5 more points and when Joshua Ray scored on an assist from McKennie, the Cavaliers went up 72-71. They didn’t lose their lead after that. The final run by the Cavs included  a three-pointer from Dwain Nash and six more points from Burton. 

The Cavaliers improved to 7-4, and they play Malcolm X College at home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Cavs take on Morton College at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Thursday basketball doubleheader will be  Manteno Night at KCC’s Ryan Gym.  All Manteno School District students and teachers are welcome. Elementary students get in free. Junior high, high school students and teachers are free with a student or staff ID. All other adults are $5.

KCC Basketball vs. KVCC 11/21/2023

Kankakee Community College was edged out by Kalamazoo Valley Community College Tuesday, giving the Lady Cavaliers their first loss of the young season.

In the first quarter, the duo of Valorie Dagg and Jazmyn Smith powered the Cavaliers to a 9-2 lead. Brianna Sneed hit a 3-pointer to put KCC ahead by 10. The Cougars, led by 6 points from Brynne Johnson, narrowed the Cavaliers’ lead to 14-12. The first quarter ended with KCC ahead 17-15 after the Cavs’ Kayla Jackson hit  a 3-pointer, but it was  matched by a buzzer-beating trey from the Cougars.

Early in the second quarter, Jackson and Sneed recorded 3-pointers, helping the Cavaliers score 7 consecutive points. The Cougars responded with 12 straight points, to even up the game. Amaria Pender scored 4 points for KCC, but Kalamazoo Valley was able to  take a 35-28 lead at the half.

The Cougars extended their lead to 15 points, before Pender recorded 4 points and Jaida Taylor added 2 points to stall the Cougars. The Cavaliers recorded three 3-pointers in quick succession, one from Pender and two from Sneed. Aniyah Moody rounded out the third quarter scoring with a 3-point play to narrow the Cavaliers deficit to seven.

The Cavaliers bounced back in impressive fashion, outscoring the Cougars 23-17 in the fourth quarter. At one point,  Smith scored a free throw to put the Cavaliers under by just five points, 54-49. Kalamazoo Valley responded with four points, but a 3-pointer by Jackson and a three-point play from Pender narrowed the Cougars’ lead to 3 points. The Cougars were leading 68-64 with seconds left in the game. Smith scored a three-pointer, but the Cavaliers could not get another bucket.

The final score was KCC, 67, and Kalamazoo Valley, 68.

Pender led the Cavaliers with 15 points, 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Sneed had 12 points (four 3-pointers), 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Smith tacked on 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Dagg had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Jackson added 9 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. 

The Cavaliers are 5-1, and will return home to face Oakton College at 5:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 30.

KCC Basketball vs. LMC 11/11/2023

The Kankakee Community College Cavaliers bounced back from an early deficit to take an 88-65 win over Lake Michigan College Saturday afternoon at home.

The Red Hawks were ahead 29-22 early. Momentum swung toward the Cavaliers when Noah Mason hit two free throws  Lucas Burton scored two from the floor.  

The Cavaliers  closed out the half with a  47-42 lead.

In the second half, the Cavaliers blew open the lead, outscoring the Red Hawksa41 to 23 margin. The second half started with a 3-pointer from Rashad Smith of KCC. That launched a scoring spree of 12 uninterrupted points for the Cavaliers.

KCC didn’t give up the lead. They outscored the Red Hawks 41 to 23 in the second half on the way to an 88-65 victory.

Desilva led the Cavaliers’ with 18 points. Chavez Woods had 12 points. Jamonte Smith, Mason, and Burton each added 11 points. Khylan McKennie tacked on 9 points.

The Cavaliers improved to 4-0, and travel to Vincennes University at for a 7 p.m. (EST) game on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

KCC Soccer vs. BSC 10/21/2023

The Kankakee Community College men’s soccer team ended their season Saturday afternoon with a dominant 4-1 victory over Bryant and Stratton College. 

The KCC Cavaliers had five attempts on goal within the first 30 minutes, coming from Mark Griffith, Nathaniel Brown, Matt Guiney, and Marc Robertson. Following a missed shot by the Bobcats, the loose ball was knocked into the goal by Griffith to put the Cavaliers ahead 1-0.

After a breakaway shot by Brown was deflected and the Bobcats took control of the play, Adrian Duncan stepped up defensively, and passed to Brown, who recorded an assist when Jesus Guzman scored for the Cavs. 

With one minute remaining in the first half, the Bobcats pushed through KCC’s defense to score their only goal of the match, narrowing the Cavaliers’ lead to 2-1.

Robertson played a key part in the Cavaliers’ defensive in the second half by taking the ball away from the Bobcats every time they neared the goal. Robertson also scored on a pass from Malachai Daniel to extend KCC’s lead to 3-1.

Daniel also scored on a pass from Chris Garcia late in the match to give the Cavaliers their last point and a 4-1 victory.

The Cavaliers ended the season with a record of 6-9.

KCC Volleyball vs. PSC 9/28/2023

The Kankakee Community College women’s volleyball team powered to an away victory against Prairie State College on Thursday night, Sept. 28. 

In the first set, the Pioneers of Prairie State worked their way to an early 6-2 lead, before a pair of kills from Gabrielle Bradley helped the KCC Cavs turn the game around. The Cavs went on to claim the set 25-12.

The Cavaliers were led by Drew Hosselton in the second set, as she recorded two service aces and four kills. KCC won the set 25-7. 

A six-point run by Hosselton, Bradley, and Valorie Dagg gave the Cavaliers the lead early in the third set. Midway through, KCC went on a nine-point run before another service ace by Hosselton solidified the win for the Cavaliers, 25-10.

The Cavaliers improved to 8-9 for the season. They travel to Glen Ellyn to take on College of DuPage on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

KCC Soccer vs. Kishwaukee College

The Kankakee Community College Women’s soccer team scored five times to shutout Kishwaukee College at home on Thursday night.

Despite early pressure from the Cougars of Kishwaukee, the Cavaliers were able to make several scoring attempts. The Cavs’ Aiyana Lopez scored first at the seven-minute mark.

The Cavaliers kept their momentum, and Mariel Camargo and Tess Wallace made several scoring attempts over the next ten minutes. After Camargo scored to put the Cavaliers up 2-0, Hailey Brady put away another goal for the Cavs, with an assist by Mya Ramdoo.

KCC maintained pressure on the Cougars, with near misses from Samantha Porras and Alayna Valone. Porras went on to score a goal for the Cavs, and the lead was 4-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Cougars fought back with more intensity both offensively and defensively. The Cavaliers stopped the pressure, and a quick turnaround led to another goal from Camargo. 

Camargo, Wallace, Samantha Popek, and Sheleza Mungal all made several attempts to score throughout the half. Despite the offensive effort,  a quick second half ended without any more goals. 

The Cavaliers are 2-6-1 this season. The team hosts Joliet Junior College at 2 p.m. on Oct. 3.

KCC Volleyball vs. JJC 9/20

In spite of big scoring by several team members,  the Kankakee Community College volleyball team fell to Joliet Junior College in three sets Wednesday night. 

The Cavaliers got off to a strong start in the first set and stayed close until the charging Wolves from JJC, had a six-point surge to end the set 25-15.

The Cavaliers fought back against several big plays for the Wolves in the second, but it was not enough, and JJC won that set 25-20. The Cavaliers were led offensively by Gabrielle Bradley, a Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School graduate, who recorded seven kills. 

In the final set, KCC’s Drew Hosselton scored the first point before JJC ran off five straight points. KCC was led in the third set by Valorie Dagg, who scored on two kills and two blocks. Despite Dagg’s success, several runs by the Wolves put them ahead for the set, 25-19, and a match victory. 

The Cavaliers (6-5) travel to Waubonsee Community College to play four matches Sept. 22-23 in the “Region 4 Crossover”.

KCC Volleyball vs. Highland CC 9/16

After defeating Olive-Harvey College Saturday morning to begin a tri-match, the Kankakee Community College volleyball team took on Highland Community College Saturday afternoon, securing a win in three close sets.

Early in the first set, the Highland Cougars pulled ahead, leading by six points. The Cavaliers bounced back with a service ace from Emma Creek and a kill from Drew Hosselton to move ahead. KCC’s momentum led to a first set win, 25-19.

The Cougars had a burst of energy to begin the second set, and they were ahead early.   The Cavaliers recorded kills from Hosselton, Chloe Blakey and Gabrielle Bradley to go ahead.  The Cougars then reclaimed the lead until the Cavs answered with six consecutive points to take the set 25-22.

In the third set, a late charge of four straight points by the Cougars nearly erased the Cavaliers’ lead. A well-timed kill from Valorie Dagg solidified the win for KCC, 25-23.

The Cavaliers improved to 6-4, and next take on Joliet Junior College on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in the KCC Ryan Gymnasium.

KCC Volleyball vs. Moraine Valley CC 9/12

The Kankakee Community College volleyball team fell to the Moraine Valley Community College in five sets during a difficult match on Tuesday night.  

In the first set, former Manteno High School standout Drew Hosselton tipped the ball over the net late, giving the Cavaliers hope, but Moraine Valley responded by scoring two points and claiming the set 27-25. In the second, the Cyclones scored several service aces, creating a small lead which grew until they claimed the set 25-18.  

In the third, KCC’s Gabrielle Bradley and Valorie Dagg made their marks, recording three kills a piece. Gianna Basile handled the Cavaliers’ defense, scoring on two blocks. Despite a short-lived MVCC run in the middle of the third set, the Cavaliers kept their lead. An error by the Cyclones secured the set for KCC, 25-18.  

The comeback continued in the fourth set, with Hosselton adding six kills. The Cavaliers later scored five consecutive points to claim the set 25-23.

The match was tied going into the fifth set. The Cyclones took control of the set early and didn’t budge. Although KCC had a run of four points, two  from Bradley, it was not enough. The Cyclones walked out with a 15-12 victory and the match.

The Cavaliers are 4-4 this season and next play Olivet Nazarene University’s junior varsity squad on Friday, Sept. 15 in Bourbonnais, IL.

KCC Soccer vs. Waubonsee CC 9/9

Despite a hat-trick by one Cavaliers player, the Kankakee Community College women’s soccer team lost to Waubonsee Community College on Saturday, Sept. 9.

KCC’s Cavaliers stayed strong under pressure the entire game. Early in the first half, the Waubonsee Chiefs made several unsuccessful surges toward the net. During one early save, KCC’s goalkeeper Mia Robbins had a cleat strike her face, and she had to leave the field. Freshman goalkeeper Haven Maple filled Robbins’ spot, and racked up multiple saves, while still allowing Waubonsee three goals.

The Cavaliers were able to make several attempts to score as well.  The first half ended with the Cavs down 0-3.

Mariel Camargo, a Cavaliers sophomore from Kankakee, brought the Cavaliers hope for a turnaround early in the second, catching a cross-field pass and scoring a quick goal. That was soon followed by a goal from Waubonsee, putting them up 4-1.

Cavs sophomore Samantha Popek made several drives, resulting in shots that missed by a small margin. Camargo scored again, shrinking the Cavs’ deficit to two. The Chiefs returned in full force, but despite their best efforts, Maple continued to save the ball, allowing Waubonsee to score no more goals.

With just ten minutes remaining in the game, Camargo completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game. Despite several attempts, the Cavaliers were unable to get the ball into the net again, and they ended with a tough 3-4 loss.

The Cavaliers fell to 1-3-1 on the season and travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to play Madison College on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

KCC Soccer vs. Northeast CC 9/9

The Kankakee Community College Cavaliers men’s soccer team took on the Northeast Community College Hawks Saturday, Aug. 9. The Hawks, ranked seventh in the NJCAA Div. II pre-season poll, took control of the game early. After several saves by KCC goalkeeper Tariq Singh, the Hawks capitalized on an open field and scored first.

The Hawks played fast, and scored again at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Cavaliers increased the pressure when Mark Griffith, a KCC sophomore, made a decisive drive to the net, passing to another sophomore, Marc Robertson, who shot and nearly scored. Northeast was able to turn the game around and extended their lead to 3-0.

The Cavaliers’ defense continued to improve as the game progressed, and they topped every other drive by the Hawks.

KCC’s offense in the second half was more aggressive, led by sophomore Adrian Duncan, who made shots from the ground and the air. In the last moments of the game, KCC had one more opportunity following a failed Northeast penalty kick. On that Hail Mary shot, Kankakee High School grad Noah Lacy just missed the net. The game ended with Northeast earning the win, 3-0.

The Cavaliers record is 2-3 going into their match against Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin, on Tuesday.

KCC MBB vs Aurora University JV 2-12-23

KCC hit the road on Sunday and faced off against Aurora University JV and pulled out a victory 70-57. 

Top performer for the game was Sean Black, who contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds. He shot 5-11 from the field and was 4-4 from the free throw line. Robert Stroud also had a great game, scoring 16 points and grabbing 2 rebounds, shooting 6-9 from the field.

Jaelyn Anderson had a solid game, with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. Isaiah Placide and Joshua Holmes also had impressive performances, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Noah Mason contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds.

The Lady Cavs faced off against Black Hawk College on Saturday in Moline. KCC battled and was within 2 points going into the 4th quarter, but ultimately fell to Black Hawk 58-72 being outscored 26-12 in the 4th quarter. Jazmyn Smith was the top performer for the Lady Cavs, scoring 17 points on 8-13 shooting from the field. Sarah Burton also had a solid performance with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

MBB Game Highlights 2-7-23

The Cavaliers faced off with last year’s national runner up Triton College on Thursday night, and the game did not disappoint. The result was a double overtime thriller, but ultimately Triton came out on top with a final score of 95-88.

For the Cavs, Robert Stroud had a phenomenal game with 34 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. Sean Black was a great playmaker with 7 points and 12 assists, while Isaiah Placide contributed 9 points and 1 assist. Joshua Holmes had 8 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound, and Noah Mason added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 made free-throws.

They will be back in action on Sunday as they play Aurora University JV.

The Lady Cavs faced off against Triton College in an exciting game on Thursday night. Despite putting up a strong fight and leading after 3 quarters, KCC ultimately fell to Triton with a final score of 86-77.

Leading the way for Kankakee was Jazmyn Smith, who had a dominant performance with 8-15 shooting from the field and 13-14 shooting from the free-throw line, resulting in 29 points. Valorie Dagg had a perfect shooting night with 6-6 from the field and 1-1 from the free-throw line, finishing with 13 points. Sarah Burton contributed 10 points, while Amarii Mays added 6 points.

The Lady Cavs will be back in action on the road Sunday for a 1pm game at Black Hawk College.

KCC Cavaliers Rivalry Clash

The KCC Cavaliers are gearing up for a huge rivalry game this week against the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, the South Suburban College Bulldogs. Both teams have been playing some of their best basketball as of late, with Kankakee sporting a 13-8 record and riding a two game winning streak into the contest. The Bulldogs come in with an even better 18-3 record and six straight victories under their belts.
 
Kankakee will be looking to Rob Stroud who averages 13.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game to lead them on offense, while Isaiah Placide contributes another 13 points and 5.9 rebounds per outing. On defense, they’ll need all hands on deck if they hope to slow down South Suburban’s high scoring duo of Nakyel Shelton (22.8 ppg) and Damontae Taylor (18.9 ppg). 
 
It promises to be a thrilling matchup between two teams that always seem ready to give it their all when they face off against each other – no matter what is at stake! Be sure not to miss out on this classic rivalry clash as the Cavaliers look for revenge against last year’s national champs!

KCC Signing Day Player Profiles

 

Alayna Valone-

Alayna Valone a standout winger at Reed Custer High School will add some speed and creativity on field for the Lady Cavs this upcoming Fall season. Alayna’s pace will cause defensive thirds some trouble and help create scoring opportunities. She adds that creativity factor in the final with her crossing ability with both feet and her finishing! Excited to welcome aboard Alayna Valone.

 

Scotty Eldridge-

The defense for the Cavaliers is in good hands with incoming freshman Scotty Eldridge. Eldridge brings to the Cavaliers a defensive tenacity that is hard to find. Hard nose for winning 50/50 balls coupled with his smart decision making out of the back, will allow the Cavs to be very dynamic moving forward in the attack.

 

Samantha Porras-

Very excited to have Samantha Porras joining the Lady Cavs this fall. Samantha was a standout goalie for Southland Striker and Slayers Academy. Samantha brings an amazing work ethic/drive to be the best player she can be. She also brings a fearlessness approach to goalie that will provide as a great anchor to the defense.

 

Aiyana Lopez- 

The rich keep on getting richer! We are excited to bring on Aiyana Lopez a stand out winger at Kankakee High School! Lopez is bringing to the Lady Cavs a can dot spirit along with her attacking third creativity. Aiyana Lopez final third creativity will be vital for the Lady Cavs this upcoming fall! We are excited to bring on such a talent like Aiyana Lopez.

 

Mia Robbins-

We are very excited to have Mia Robbins joining the Lady Cavs this upcoming Fall! Mia is a force to be reckon with in the back of the net! She brings an elite level of athleticism to the goalie position! Mia will be a vital part of the Lady Cavaliers!

 

Jesus Guzman-

Jesus has been a anchor for the Bradley Bourbonnais High school Men’s team, and will bolster the Cavs defense. Jesus has a great soccer IQ, and his size will pose a problem for opposing teams.

 

Tess Wallace-

The general of the middle field has been appointed! Tess Wallace a dynamic center mid for the BBCHS Boilers over her four years there, will come aboard for the Cavaliers this upcoming Fall! Tess’s decision making with the ball is going to create chaos for the opponent. Tess offensive mindset in setting up teammates for goal scoring opportunities.

 

Hailey Brady-

Goals are the name of the game! We are excited to add a dynamic goal scorer in Hailey Brady! Hailey has a knack for putting the ball in the back of the net! Hailey is very good in the air and winning headers off corners! She provides great runs into the box giving opportunities to score or her teammates!

 

Hailey Brooks-

The Lady Cavaliers are happy to welcome Hailey Brooks to the program! Brooks will help anchor the Cavaliers defensive! Hailey’s defensive IQ will help sure things up in the back along with her ability to go forward she poses the opposing team as serious threat!

NJCAA Academic Honors

Two teams and 23 individual athletes from Kankakee Community College have been awarded NJCAA honors for academic achievement during the 2020-21 school year. The awards were formerly called Academic All-American.

The women’s volleyball and men’s soccer teams were named 2021 NJCAA All-Academic Teams for having team GPAs above 3.0. The women’s volleyball team had an overall team GPA of 3.32 and the men’s soccer team GPA was 3.17.

The All-Academic First Team members, with a 4.0 grade point average, are:

• Leighann Allison of Kankakee, women’s soccer;
• Sierra Cureton of Manteno, volleyball;
• Caitlin Gerdes of Ashkum, volleyball;
• Anna Jennings of Cissna Park, volleyball;

Turner selected for IBCA Hall of Fame

Kankakee Community College police officer Vernal Turner does a lot of walking around the college. In his second job, he runs the sidelines as a basketball official.

In spring 2021, Turner will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his work as an official. For 17 years, Turner has been an Illinois High School Association official.

He currently officiates for the Northern Athletic Conference, Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. For eight seasons, Turner has been an official at NBA training camps for the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls. In 2019, he became a court side administrator, working for the NBA.

Among the noteworthy high school games he has officiated are seven Chicago city championships; three IHSA boys basketball championships (3-A in 2013, 4-A in 2014, and 3-A and 4-A in 2019); and the McDonald’s All-American game in 2016. He will be the first person to have played in IBCA All-Star Game (1981), officiate the IBCA All-Star Game (2016), and be inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame.

In all, there will be more than 100 new IBCA Hall of Fame members, including nine officials. Due to COVID-19, the IBCA has not finalized its plans for an induction ceremony.

Turner also is president of Top Notch Officiating Camp for Officials Training and Development. In 2019 and 2020, he organized the Top Notch Health Awareness Challenge at KCC. The event pitted Kankakee-area high school basketball teams playing teams from Chicago. Each team also participated in health awareness sessions.

At KCC, Turner has been a part-time police officer since 2015.

KCC sports will restart in 2021

Following the NJCAA’s announcement this week that fall and winter sports will be held, but on a delayed schedule, KCC athletics will spend the fall preparing for next year’s competitions.

The seasons for indoor sports, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, will begin in January 2021. Volleyball is traditionally a fall sport, and basketball seasons usually begin in November. Fall outdoor seasons for men’s and women’s soccer will be delayed until April 2021.

Schedules for individual teams will be posted to athletics.kcc.edu as soon as they are available. Additional information on the NJCAA Plan of Action are on KCC’s news site and at njcaa.org.

22 Athletes earn honors

Twenty-three Kankakee Community College student-athletes have received NJCAA honors for academic achievements during the 2019-20 school year.
